Dr. Vikram Vishal
Dr. Vikram Vishal is the first graduate from the IITB-Monash Research Academy, who worked on carbon sequestration in Indian coal seams under the supervision of Prof. T. N. Singh (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Ranjith P. G. (Monash Univ). He worked on both numerical and experimental aspects of this study, the focus being on geomechanical and petrophysical aspects of carbon storage in coal using novel techniques. He received the National Young Scientist Award at 98th Indian Science Congress, the National Geoscience Award - Young Researcher by the Govt. of India and the IIT Bombay Excellence in Ph.D. Award. He bagged four consecutive Academy Oskars during his three year candidature, including the Oskar for Best Ph.D. thesis. Dr. Vishal served IIT Roorkee as DST-Inspire Faculty and went on to pursue post-doctoral research as a Fulbright Nehru Fellow to Stanford University, USA.
Dr. Vishal has joined his alma mater, he is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at IIT Bombay and supervises students at the IITB Monash Research Academy.

Dr. Gunjan Gupta
Gunjan Gupta completed her M.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science from IIT Bombay. Her strength lies in the area of planning, coordinating and organizing. She is proud of her positive attitude, passion and determination for work. Her hobbies are traveling, chatting and doing adventurous things. She has finished doing her Ph.D. on the topic "Conducting Polymer Corrosion Resistance Coating for Aircraft Applications" under the supervision of Prof. A.S. Khanna (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Nick Birbilis (Monash University).

Dr. Siddharth Gadkari
Dr. Siddharth Gadkari completed his PhD from the IITB-Monash Research Academy in 2013. In his thesis titled " Viscous liquid jets and filaments in electric fields " Siddharth has worked on several problems studying the various instabilities that are developed on Newtonian & Polymer jets and filaments when subjected to electric fields. He was supervised by Dr. Prabhakar Ranganathan & Dr Ravi Prakash Jagadeeshan from Monash University and Dr. P Sunthar & Dr. Rochish Thaokar from IIT Bombay. Siddharth is currently working at COMSOL-India as Technical Engineer.
My experience in the Academy has been brilliant and far exceeded my expectations. I owe a huge thanks to Prof. Tam Sridhar and Prof. Mohan Krishnamoorthy, whose vision to make a world class research institute gave birth to the IITB-Monash Research Academy. It was only because of this unique program that I got the opportunity to work with some of the best researchers of India and Australia. I feel proud of the fact that I was one of the four students who graduated from the Academy in its first convocation in 2013. I will forever attribute my professional success to The Academy.

Dr.Shamsuddin N. Ladha
Dr. Shamsuddin received his Ph.D. in July 2013. His Ph.D. thesis considers how images can be modified for projection onto casual surfaces to enhance user experiences, correcting for geometric distortions, defocus blur, global illumination artifacts, and obstruction avoidance. Such techniques along with natural interaction, are particularly useful when projectors are used within virtual environments. He is currently working as a Senior Research Associate at Infosys Labs. Prior to joining the Ph.D. program at IITB-Monash Research Academy, he did MS in Computer Science from Loyola University of Chicago, US (2002). He then worked in the capacity of Software Engineer for about 4 years. He is interested in inter-disciplinary research in Computer Vision, Image Processing and Machine Learning.

Dr. Nilesh Raykar
Dr. Nilesh Raykar completed his M.Tech in 'Design Engineering' from IIT Bombay securing first rank in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He worked for 19 years in the Heavy Engineering Division of M/S Larsen & Toubro Limited, Powai Works, in the field of design and special analysis of critical high pressure process equipment.
Nilesh recollects, "The Academy provided a great and enriched learning experience to me. My stay at IITB and Monash University was very fulfilling for my academic as well as personal growth. I appreciate the warm support offered by office of The Academy during my tenure".
He is currently working as Professor and Head of Mechanical Engineering Department at Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai.

Dr. Naresh Nalajala
Dr. Naresh Nalajala completed his masters in science with specialization Physics from Andhra University college, Bhimavaram, Andhra Pradesh and another masters in technology with specialization Materials Science from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirapalli, Tamilanadu. Soon after he joined The academy to pursue his doctoral studies under the supervision of Prof. Manoj Neergat, Department of Energy Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay and Prof. Bradley Ladewig, Department of Chemical Engineering, Monash University. His thesis work entitled “Synthesis of shape-controlled palladium nanoparticles and their platinum-coated counterparts - the importance of the exposed facets and surfactant removal on the electrochemical characteristics” deal with facet engineering of nanocrystals for energy-conversion applications. Currently, he is working with Dr. C. S. Gopinath, senior principle scientist, catalysis division, CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory Pune, Maharastra as a postdoctoral fellow with the aim at the design of novel nanoarchitectures for ambient temperature CO oxidation reaction.
Besides, Dr. Naresh is interested about in enhance the green with his mission platform “One student one tree – a green revolution”. He is passion about learn and practice zero-budget agriculture farming (inspired by Padmashri Dr. Subhas Palekhar, A natural agriculture farming scientist) at his agriculture land with the aim of providing pesticide-free agriculture products (rice, vegetables etc.) for the society.
Dr. Naresh is always sincerely thankful to the academy for providing an ideal platform to pursue his research interests and that paves him to accomplish his research objectives in the field of nanoscience and technology with the support from his supervisors.

Dr. Naveen S
Dr. Naveen Nair worked for his doctoral dissertation with Dr. Ganesh Ramakrishnan (IIT Bombay) and Dr. Shonali Krishnaswamy (Monash University), and successfully completed and defended his PhD (Computer Science and Engineering) in the broad area of Machine Learning. His thesis titled "Learning Discriminative Relational Features for Sequence Labeling" looks into automatically constructing powerful features to improve sequence labeling. Activity recognition, Natural language processing, etc. are the typical application areas of his project. At present, Naveen Nair is working at the Amazon Development Centre, Bangalore, as a Machine Learning Analyst.
Naveen says, "I feel proud that I was amongst the first batch of students of this exclusive dual-badged PhD programme. I really enjoyed the time I spent during my PhD. It was a great learning experience coupled with wholesome entertainment and unadulterated fun. I am blessed to have gained such capable and worthy mentors and good friends during my tenure at the Academy."

Dr. Bharat S. Padekar
Dr. Bharat has an M.Tech in Mechanical Design Engineering with distinction from College of Engineering, Pune. His research at The Academy involves elucidating the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking of Magnesium Alloys under the guidance of Dr V.S. Raja and Dr Raman Singh. Bharat has an experience of 11 years in the Auto Industry & 14 years in Engg. College with a conference paper to his name.

Dr. Kunal Kumar Singh
Dr. Kunal Kumar Singh did his M.Sc in Geology in 2004 from University of Delhi. After working for two years as a Cartographic Editor (2004-06) in Dorling Kindersley (India) Ltd., at Delhi, he then went on to do M.Tech (2006-08) in Engineering Geology from Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad. He has been working at The Academy with Prof. D.N. Singh and Dr. Ranjith PG.

Dr. Niraj Ramesh Dayama
Dr. Niraj presents a blend of diverse academic backgrounds - a degree in Mechanical Engineering followed by Masters in Computational Engineering from the IIT. Niraj has eight years of consulting experience with major multinational companies of India and is a visiting faculty for colleges in Pune University. His interests include algorithms, database design and corporate soft skills.

Dr. Ruchi Grover Wankhede
Dr. Ruchi Grover Wankhede post graduated from Delhi University with organic chemistry as her major. Also did M. Phil in chemistry from Delhi University only. She has a working experience in the field of Protective Coatings as Officer Technology (R&D), Asian Paints Pvt. Ltd. In IITB-Monash Research Academy she will be working on her PhD in "Development of hydrophobic/ hydrophilic coatings through sol gel process, using fatty acid modified nano particles" under the supervision of Prof. A.S. Khanna (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Nick Birbillis (Monash University).

Dr. Rimi Chakrabarti
Dr. Rimi has a mix of diverse academic backgrounds - she is an undergraduate in Zoology (Calcutta University) and has completed a graduate degree in Biotechnology (Bangalore University). She worked as a trainee in a blood bank and as a microbiologist in a biotech firm before joining The Academy. Together with Prof. Ross L. Coppel, Prof. Brian M. Cooke, Dr. Swati Patankar and Prof Dulal Panda, she is working on a project that looks deep into the arrangement of Apicomplexan tubulin with a broad objective of developing novel, efficient chemotherapeutic agents. Besides being an avid reader, Rimi is a novice painter - her medium being glass.

Dr. Balamurali A R
Dr. Balamurali A R completed his B.Tech in Information Technology from the National Institute of Technology, Allahabad. Soon after graduating, he joined one of the top software companies in India based at Chennai as a developer. Over the next 3 year period, he worked on various technologies and has been part of many successful project endeavours. He joined The IITB-Monash Research Academy to solve frontline problems faced in computer science. His guides are Dr. Pushpak Bhattacharyya and Dr. Ingrid Zuckerman. He is interested in researching all aspects of Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval. His hobbies include photography and blogging.

Dr. Ramkumar Rajendran
Dr. Ramkumar holds a Bachelor Degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering (University of Madras) and an M.E in Communication Systems (Anna University) with distinction. After gaining two years of experience as a Software Engineer in Tata Consultancy Services, he joined The Academy to undertake a PhD. He was associated with the project "Intelligent Tutoring Systems" under the guidance of Prof Sridhar Iyer, Prof. Sahana Murthy from IIT Bombay and Prof Campbell Wilson, Prof Judy Sheard from Monash University. After Completion of PhD from The Academy, Ramkumar joined NEC Central Research Laboratory in Japan and worked as researcher and Assistant Manager for two years. He is currently working as Postdoc research scholar at Teachable Agents Group in Vanderbilt University, USA.
His research experience includes learning analytics, open-ended learning environments, learner modeling, intelligent tutoring system, affective state recognition, automated reasoning, deep learning and natural language processing.

Dr. Amrita Vishwanath Poyekar
Dr. Amrita completed her B. Tech in Polymer Engineering and Technology with a distinction (73.8%). A motivated social activist, she has worked as a core member of CRY volunteer action group. Her specialization is in Polymer Engineering and Technology. Her hobbies include dance and web design. She will be working under the guidance of Dr. A.R. Bhattacharya (IIT Bombay) and Dr George P. Simon (Monash University) in The Academy. Before joining IITB-Monash Research Academy, she worked as a Research Assistant at IIT Bombay for six months on the research project "Carbon Nanotubes based Polymer Composites". Work at The Academy will include the study of issues related to Dispersion and Confinement of Multiwall Nanotubes in Immiscible Polymer Blends.

Dr. Anu Thomas
Dr. Anu Thomas did his M.Tech in Industrial Mathematics & Scientific Computing at IIT Madras, immediately after the completion of M.Sc (Mathematics) from Mahathma Gandhi University, Kottayam. He worked as a Senior Engineer for two years in Emmeskay Systems Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Chennai. His achievements include DAAD-Indian Master Sandwich Scholarship- 2006, Prof. Helmut Neunzert Endowment Prize, IIT Merit Prize, and third rank in GATE (Mathematics) 2005, CSIR-UGC JRF (2004), NBHM M. Sc. Scholarship (2003-05). Dr. Priyanka Gupta
Dr. Priyanka has completed her B.Tech in Biotechnology from West Bengal University of Technology. Soon after, she joined the PhD program at The IITB- Monash Research Academy to work on "Optimization and Designing of Bioreactors for Stem Cell applications" under Prof. Paul Verma and Prof. Kerry Hourigan from Monash University and Prof. Jayesh Bellare and Prof. Jadhav from IIT Bombay. Apart from tinkering with cells and test tubes, she is interested in books, music and dance.

Dr. Akash Nigam
Dr. Akash has done his B.Tech in Information and Communication Technology from DA-IICT, Gandhinagar in 2008. He did his B. Tech project at IIT Delhi and worked as Research Fellow at IIT Bombay before joining the Academy for PhD in Dec 2009. He will be working at the Academy with Prof Ramgopal Rao (IIT Bombay) and Prof Malin Premaratne (Monash University) for studying the "Transport in Novel Semiconductor Devices". His work includes both the analytical modeling and the experimentation in field of flexible electronics. Besides this, Akash has great interest in field games and he loves to read and blog.

Dr. Srinivas Reddy
Dr. Sreenivas has done his M.Sc.(Tech) Engineering Physics (2006-2009) with specialization in Photonics from National Institute of Technology, Warangal. After that he worked in the Central Scientific Instruments Organization (CSIR Lab), Chandigarh on Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors. Due to the work in the research laboratory under the guidance of senior scientists in the laboratory he got motivated towards PhD and joined in the Academy on project titled "Photonic Crystal Antenna-Design and Fabrication".

Dr. Sharadwata Pan
Dr. Sharad completed his B.Tech and M.Tech in Biotechnology from JIIT University securing a high distinction. After working for 4 months as a Guest Faculty in the Dept. of Biotechnology, University of Burdwan (West Bengal), he joined The Academy to pursue his doctoral studies. His research interests include Rheology, studies of linear DNA, single polymer dynamics and molecular biotechnology. He is working at The Academy with Dr. P. Sunthar (IIT Bombay) and Dr. Ravi P. Jagadeeshan and Prof. Tam Sridhar (Monash University).

Dr. Ganesh Soni
Dr. Ganesh Soni completed his BE in Mechanical Engineering from VNIT, Nagpur and ME in Mechanical Design Engineering from BITS, Pilani. His PhD work is in multiscale modeling for damage evolution in laminated composites. In his work, micro-mechanical damage physics like matrix damage, fiber failure, fiber-matrix interface failure has been captured using multiscale modeling technique. His PhD supervisors were Dr. Ramesh Singh, Dr. Mira Mitra, Dr. Brian Falzon and Dr. Wenyi Yan. He has experience of designing components using plastics and rubbers. At present he is working with MSC Software, Pune as a Lead Engineer for Quality Assurance, Bench marking and Pre-Sales support of multiscale material modeling software ‘DIGIMAT’.

Dr. Rinkel Jindal
Rinkel Jindal completed his M.Tech from IIT Roorkee with a specialization in Industrial Metallurgy and completed his Masters Thesis in the area of Glass-Ceramics from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, on DAAD scholarship. He has a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Kurukshetra University Kurukshetra, Haryana. After completing his M.Tech, he has joined the Academy to do his PhD. He is working under the guidance of Prof. V. S. Raja and Prof. Chris Hutchinson on the project of "High Performance Light Alloys through Non-Equilibrium Processing".

Dr. Jubina Balan
Jubina Balan graduated from Mumbai University with a major in Biotechnology and attained her M Tech in Biotechnology from Dr. D.Y. Patil University. She has worked at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre-Mumbai on the production of anti- cancerous compounds from Psoraleacorlifolia using hairy root and callus culture. She also worked at the Centre for Genetic Research & Diagnostic Laboratory, M.G.M Hospital gaining experience in: -Human Cell& Tissue Culture Techniques, Karyotyping, FISH, Estimation of Abnormalities in Human Peripheral Blood, lymphocytes invitro and Human Syndromes. Together with Dr Paul Verma and Dr Huseyin Sumer from Monash University and Prof Dulal Panda from IIT Bombay, she is working on the project "Generation and Characterization of Induced Pluripotent Cells (iPSCs) and Studying Checkpoint Mechanism in Human Somatic Cells and iPSCs".

Dr. Edmund Carvalho
Edmund Carvalho completed his M.Sc in Biochemistry from Pune University. After which he went on to pursue his Masters of technology in Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He has currently joined IITB-Monash Research Academy to work on the project "In situ Gelling Nano-particulate Systems for Tissue Engineering using Stem Cells" with Prof Rinti Banerjee(IIT Bombay) and Dr. Paul Verma (Monash University).

Dr. Goutam Sen
Goutam completed his B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from Kalyani Govt. Engineering College affiliated to West Bengal University of Technology. He worked as an intern in Tata Consultancy Services for two months and as a project associate in Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata for one year. His inclination towards research and development motivated him to pursue a PhD at The Academy. He is currently working under the guidance of Prof. Mohan Krishnamoorthy and Prof. Narayan Rangaraj.

Dr. Kamlesh Pawar
Dr Kamlesh Pawar's passion lies in development of novel imaging technologies. He was offered TCS Research Fellowship for his PhD thesis entitled "Compressive Parallel MRI for Accelerated Imaging". His expertise include MR Physics, MR Pulse Sequence Design and MR Image Reconstruction. He has experience in both Academia and Industry.
He worked in industry with Cadence Design Systems (Pune, India) for 2.4 years just after completion of his PhD. In Industry his contribution includes implementation of Imaging algorithms and development of Instruction set architecture for SIMD processor.
He recently (Nov 2016), moved to Monash Biomeidcal Imaging (Melbourne, Australia) as a Research Scientist and is contributing on the development of accurate quantitative imaging methods and motion correction strategies for MR imaging.

Dr. Ajay Nagesh
Ajay has graduated with an M.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Bombay. He holds a Bachelors degree in the same area from R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore. After his Masters he had a brief stint as a software engineer at Citrix Systems. His areas of interest lie at the intersection of natural language processing and machine learning. His research work is focused on Learning for Semantic Parsing and is under the guidance of Prof Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan and Prof Geoff Webb. He enjoys reading history, fiction, philosophy, is an amateur quizzer, is interested in languages and is a self- professed connoisseur of movies.

Dr. Banambar Singh
Banambar has completed M. Sc. and M. Tech in Earth Sciences from IIT Bombay. Soon after, due to a keen interest on renewable sources of energy, he joined IITB-Monash Research Academy on the project "A numerical study of creation of optimal fracture networks for heat extraction from Engineered Geothermal Reservoirs" under Prof. D. Chandrasekharam (IIT Bombay), who's worked intensively on Geothermal Energy, and Prof. R. P. Gamage (Monash University). Beside academics, he is good at sports. He has represented IIT Bombay champion team in Basketball at Inter IIT events in 2008 & 2009 and Orissa in Under-19 Baseball Championship in 2005. His hobbies include trekking, photography.

Dr. Saroj Yadav
Saroj Yadav has done her Bachelors in Biochemistry from RVS College of Arts & Science and has completed her Masters in Biotechnology from IIT Bombay. Soon after, she joined the PhD program at the IITB-Monash Research Academy. Dr. Saurabh Nene
Dr. Saurabh Nene has defended his thesis entitled "Development of Ultra-light and Ultra-fine Mg-Li-Ca Alloy by Compositional Optimization and Severe Plastic Deformation" under the supervision of Prof. B. P. Kashyap (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Yuri Estrin (Monash University) on 27th May 2016 which was coincidently his birthday. He was successful to develop new ultralight Mg based alloy which could be useful for lightweight as well as biodegradable implant application. This work got global recognition since it was noted by highly reputed Magazine named ‘Materials Today’. Nevertheless, He bagged 2 Oskars namely Oskar for best PhD thesis and highest CPI in PhD course work during his 3.5 years candidature. From the career side, He was shortlisted by 5 IITs (IITGn, IITH, IITR, IITI, IITBbs) for the position of Assistant Professor just after completing his PhD and now he is working as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Centre for Friction Stir Processing, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of North Texas, USA.

Sonal Thengane completed his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from Laxminarayan Institute of Technology, Nagpur and M.E. in Chemical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Sherly completed her B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering) from Kerala Agricultural University. After that she pursued her M.Tech (Hydraulic & Water Resources Engineering) from IIT Madras. Dr. Bhukya Hussain
Bhukya Hussain completed his Bachelors degree from Kakatiya University and thereafter joined a two years M.Sc. program in the Department of Chemistry, IIT Bombay where he did his masters project in Computational Biology in the lab of Dr. Ruchi Anand which involved Structure Based Drug Designing.
