Research Scholar Ashish Unnarkat successfully defended his thesis on 19th July 2016.
Ashish has made significant breakthroughs in improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process for nylon. In spite of the advent of a large number of new materials, nylon continues to be popular for a wide range of commercial applications; almost 4 million tonnes of the material is produced around the world every year. Nylon precursors are manufactured by liquid-phase oxidation of hydrocarbon feedstock in the presence of a catalyst. The prevalent manufacturing process uses cobalt in homogeneous form as a catalyst. Currently, the catalyst is used up in the process, as a result of which it needs to be constantly and continuously replenished.
In order to reduce the expense that this entails, Ashish chose to develop reusable heterogeneous alternatives to the homogeneous cobalt in prevalent use overcoming severe constraints relative to safety and analytical accuracy along the way. "Improvements in the yield from the manufacturing process will help in reducing the energy required for unit production and, consequentially, the carbon footprint." He explains.
Ashish worked under the guidance of Prof. Tam Sridhar, Prof. Huanting Wang, Prof. S. M. Mahajani and Prof. A. K. Suresh. He worked on the project titled "Catalytic and Reaction Engineering Studies on Organic Liquid Phase Oxidation of Cyclohexane".

Ashish Unnarkat is the 42nd graduate of the Academy. Ashish has joined Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) in Gandhinagar as a faculty. Congratulations!
