Karan Thanawala

Karan Thanawala did his M.Sc in Surface Coating Technology and B.Sc in Industrial Chemistry from Sardar Patel University. He has been awarded with two Gold Medals for securing highest marks in Masters from the same university. He had previously worked as Junior Research Fellow in IIT Bombay, on the Development of Superhydrophobic Coatings by Sol-gel route under Prof. A. S. Khanna in Corrosion Science and Engg. (MEMS Dept.). Currently pursuing his PhD in “Development of Self-Healing Coatings”, under Prof. A. S. Khanna (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Raman Singh (Monash University).

Kaushik Choudhury


Kaushik Choudhury

Kaushik Choudhury is a Physics major of 2004 batch from St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi. He received his Masters degree in Physics from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2006. He worked on different research projects at BIT Mesra, Ranchi and SGSITS, Indore. He had been teaching Physics to the B.E. freshmen for last two and a half years at SGSITS Indore, before joining the academy. He has two papers published in International conferences and one in an international journal. He is working on a project titled, “Nano-biofuel Cell based on Nanoporous Carbon”. His area of interest is physics and its application to sustainable development. He likes cycling, listening to light music and blogging.

Jayesh Sonawane


Jayesh Sonawane

Jayesh Manohar Sonawane completed his Masters Degree in Microbiology from University of Pune, Pune. Soon after his post graduate degree, he joined IIT Bombay as a Research Assistant in the department of Energy Science and Engineering. He worked on Microbial Fuel cells and communicated two research papers in renowned international journals. For his concept for a Video, Sustainability in the IIT Bombay campus won second prize in MAGEEP international video competition 2012. He joined IITB-Monash Research Academy and going to work on major challenges in microbial fuel cells viz, enhancement of bacterial kinetics and biofouling on Nafion membrane. His supervisors are Prof. Prakash C. Ghosh (IITB) and Prof. Samuel Adeloju (Monash University). He is also interested in Immunology and Molecular biology. His hobbies including playing of tabla, flute and harmonium.

Jhumur Banerjee


Jhumur Banerjee

Jhumur Banerjee did her graduation from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. After qualifying for the Graduate aptitude test for Pharmacy and NIPER JEE, she pursued MS in Pharmacy with specialization in Pharmaceutics (Design of dosage forms) from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Ahmedabad. She has applied the technique of co-crystallization with natural compounds to enhance solubility of poorly soluble molecules in her MS research work and based on this work, she has presented a paper in the annual meet of the Controlled Release Society. She wishes to extract knowledge out of natural compounds, to find molecules and approaches to formulate eco-friendly nutrients.

Harini Swaminathan


Harini Swaminathan

With a passion to work for improving health conditions in India, Harini is enrolled at the Academy under the project “Linkages of HDI to nutrition in a transient economy of India”. She graduated with a gold medal from Amity University with an M.Tech in Biotechnology. She has hands-on experience of core laboratory techniques and research methodology while working on plant molecular biology at the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation. Catapulting herself into the field of neuroscience research she worked on genetic aberrations and copy number variations in schizophrenia at the University of Madras. She won the prestigious Prudential Foundation Global Citizens Scholarship in 2013 where her idea of research changed after her stint at The Washington Center, Washington, D.C. where she worked with the government on commercialisation of ideas into tangible products. Her interest in the field of policy making, education, economics, global relations and civics has motivated her to work on her chosen field at the “Academy”. Apart from her geeky side, she enjoys being outdoors, swimming, water sports, trekking, loves travelling, reading and talking. Trained in Bharatanatyam and Kathak, she appreciates classical music, art and poetry. Being the daughter and sister of Army Officers, her love for the nation is foremost, always and ever!

Chetana Gavankar


Chetana Gavankar

Chetana Gavankar has Masters Degree in Computer Engineering from Pune University. She worked with Zensar Technologies for two years as a Software Engineer. She worked with Cummins Women’s Engineering College (Pune) as IT faculty for 8 years before joining Research Academy. Over and above regular teaching she undertook array of heuristic initiatives like guiding industry sponsored projects, coordinating Computer Society of India chapter as college faculty, own M.E. research project at CDAC on NLP and experience sharing at overseas universities (WITS-SA, UCSB-US). She is working under the guidance of Prof. N.L. Sarda (IIT Bombay) and Prof. David Taniar (from Monash University) on the project “Ontology Mapping for Geospatial Databases”.

Bankim Chandra Mahanta


Bankim Chandra Mahanta

Bankim Chandra Mahanta has completed his Graduation degree from North Orissa University in the year 2012 taking Geology as his honours subject. He has completed his Master degree (M.Sc.) from IIT Bombay in Applied Geology in the year 2014 with a specialisation in Rock Mechanics. His M.Sc. dissertation topic was “An Investigation into the effect of Joint orientation on slope stability in road cut slope”, under the supervision of Prof.T N Singh. For academic achievements he has scored Rank 125 in GATE 2014(GG: Geology and Geophysics) and JRFCSIRRank 39 in NET 2013-December. Now onwards he will continue his career as a research scholar in the IITB-Monash Research Academy with a project titled ” Investigation of fundamental mechanism on rock fracture by nanomechanics based modelling techniques”, under the guidance of Prof. T N Singh (IIT Bombay), Dr Ranjith PG and Dr WenHuiDuan (Monash University). His area of interest is Engineering geology and Petroleum Geology. Apart from his academic career he is good at cricket. He has represented various Institute cricket league during his M.Sc. career at IIT Bombay.

Bhukya Hussain


Bhukya Hussain

Bhukya Hussain completed his Bachelors degree from Kakatiya University and thereafter joined a two years M.Sc. program in the Department of Chemistry, IIT Bombay where he did his masters project in Computational Biology in the lab of Dr. Ruchi Anand which involved Structure Based Drug Designing. To get an exposure to the wet work he continued further in the same lab for one year as a project fellow with a partial economical support from IITB-Monash Research Academy. At present he is pursuing Ph.D. in Structural Biochemistry in an IITB-Monash collaborative project which deals with the “Investigation of Butyrolactone-like small molecules in regulation of Antibiotic Production in Streptomyces” under the supervision of Dr. Ruchi Anand, Dr. Milton Hearn and Dr. Reinhard Boysen.

Anvesh Gaddam

Anvesh Gaddam has completed his B.E in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University and MTech in Manufacturing Science and Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur. Soon after that he got an opportunity to work with ISRO and worked in various missions at Sriharikota for almost four years. The exposure to the industry and academia urged him to take up PhD at IITB-Monash Research Academy. He is working on ‘Design and Fabrication of Patterned Surfaces’ under the guidance of Prof. Suhas Joshi, Prof. Amit Agarwal (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Mark Thompson (Monash University).

Aditya Joshi

Aditya completed his M.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT Bombay and B.E. from KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai. During his M.Tech, he was Institute Placement Manager for IIT-B’s Placement Office. He co-authored six papers on sentiment analysis. He has joined IITB-Monash Research Academy to work on multilingual sentiment analysis with Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Prof. Mark James Carman and Prof. Reza Haffari. He has worked as a software engineer for a year in Sybase, Pune. He enjoys reading fiction, clay sculpting and creative writing.
