Uttara completed her BA in Economics and Sociology from St. Xavier’s College Mumbai. She worked with the NGO Avehi Abacus Project on developing a curriculum that addresses gender and gender sensitivity, Saath Saath – Living together in harmony before going on to do her Master’s. She completed a joint MA in Public Policy (Governance and Development) from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague and the University of York, UK under the Erasmus Mundus MAPP programme. Her thesis, The Misunderstood Middle: The emerging middle class in India and its absence from urban policy cemented her interest in urban policy in India and her determination to create more equitable and inclusive development policies in the global South. Uttara then worked with IITB’s Centre for Policy Studies (CPS) as a research assistant. She worked on creating the Centre’s MPP programme and continued to research urban policy, shifting her focus to smart cities. Her PhD research under Prof. Satish B Agnihotri (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Dharmalingam Arunachalam (Monash University) will delve into safety and surveillance in smart cites. Uttara enjoys reading, cinema, travelling, and cooking.

Yash completed his five year Integrated M.Tech course in Geophysical Technology from IIT Roorkee in 2014. Since then, he has been working in Schlumberger for almost 4 years on various seismic data processing projects and software development. In the oil industry, he realized the impact of oil exploration and extraction on the environment, and wanted to work on mitigating its effects. So he quit his job to pursue PhD in IITB Monash Research Academy, and is working on induced seismicity in CO2 enhanced oil recovery, under the supervision of Prof. Vikram Vishal (IITB), Prof. T N Singh (IITB) and Prof. Ranjith Pathegama (Monash). When he is not in the lab trying to find ways to make CO2 enhanced oil recovery more viable, he enjoys playing sports such as tennis and table-tennis, and exploring the Western Ghats through trekking and motorcycling.

Sweta Rani completed her B. Tech from Bengal College of Engineering and Technology (Durgapur), with a major in Electronics and Communication (ECE) in June, 2015. She worked as an Assistant System Engineer-Trainee in Tata Consultancy Services for six months but because of her keen interest in research, she opted for higher studies and completed her M. Tech in ECE from Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad in May, 2018. Her Master’s thesis mainly focusses on the applications of nonlinear optics in supercontinuum generation. She has also suggested a novel method for supercontinuum generation using nanowire chalcogenide core photonic crystal fiber. She is quite interested in the field of photonics and will further carry her research work in IITB Monash Research Academy under the guidance of Prof. Shobha Shukla (IIT Bombay) and Prof. Boon Mian Teo (Monash Univeristy). Her project is titled “ Tunable photonic crystal by 4D patterning“, wherein she aims to find an efficient and cost-effective method for fabricating photonic crystals.

S L Kesav Unnithan completed his masters in Geoinformatics from Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram after pursuing his under graduation in Computer Science and Engineering from Cochin University of Science and Technology. His Master’s thesis was on Spatiotemporal Mixed Effect Modelling for the Estimation of PM2.5 from MODIS AOD over the Indian subcontinent. He is currently pursuing his research on Application of model data fusion techniques for natural hazards modelling and analytics in developing countries especially in the Indian subcontinent under the guidance of Dr. Basudev Biswal (IITB), Dr. Christoph Rudiger (Monash University), Dr. Ha Bui (Monash University) and Mr. Mahesh Prakash (CSIRO).

Pramantha obtained a Master’s and M. Phil degree in English Literature at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Holding a diploma in Digital Humanities and Cultural Informatics, he worked as a Project Fellow under the ‘UGC-University with Potential for Excellence’ sponsored research program, Soundscapes of Kolkata. The project involved tracing the critical connections between sounds and spaces in a modern urban metropolis and recording narratives of entities within their sonic environments. He also worked as an associate editor of The Confidential Clerk, an international journal published by the Centre for Victorian Studies at Jadavpur University. At IITB-Monash, he plans on working on the history and cultural impact of North Indian Raga music on the public sphere in late colonial Calcutta, under the guidance of Dr Adrian McNeil (Monash) and Dr Suddhaseel Sen (IITB). He is a professional musician and a graded performer at the All India Radio, and his interests include chess, video games, horror movies, and classical music.

Monica Upadhyay has completed her B.Sc. Zoology (H) from University of Delhi and Masters in Biotechnology from Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. She has also done one year PG Diploma course in Biochemical and Molecular Biology Techniques. She has been involved in various research projects during course work and she was selected for summer research internship by Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS) during M.Sc. After qualifying GATE, DBT JRF and Joint CSIR-UGC NET JRF, She has qualified GRE and TOEFL as well. At IITB-Monash Research Academy, she will be working under the guidance of Dr. Kiran Kondabagil (Supervisor, IIT Bombay), Dr. Sanjeeva Srivastava (Co-Supervisor, IIT Bombay) and Dr. Gregory Moseley (Monash University) on the project titled ‘Finding cues for metabolism inside giant virus particles. Are giant viruses alive?’ Monica likes to participate in various extra-curricular activities. She loves reading and travelling and tries to learn science from day to day experiences.

Mallikarjuna Korrapati obtained his Masters in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Mechatronics from National Institute Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Karnataka, and Bachelors in Mechanical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. He has communicated three papers in IEEE conference and two papers in springer based conference. His areas of interests include Biosensors, control theory, Teleoperated systems and robotics for biomedical applications. He would be working on a project titled : “Tactile sensor array for biomedical applications ” under the supervision of Prof. Dipti Gupta (IIT Bombay), Prof. Sunita Chauhan and Dr.Gita Pendhakar (Monash University). He enjoys playing badminton and also likes photography and playing Guitar. Interested in talks about mindfulness and spirituality.

Kushal completed his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from CET (Govt.) Bhubaneswar (2007-11) and Master’s in Metallurgical Engineering and Material Science from IIT Bombay (2015-17). He has worked for a period of 4.5 years in a heavy steel industry. His industrial experience include hot rolling of steel plates, mechanical machinery maintenance and continuous casting. Before joining IITB-Monash Research Academy he was associated with IIT Bombay as a Jr. Research Fellow for a period of six months working on the mechanical behaviour of perovskite based photovoltaics funded by DST. His Master’s thesis was dedicated to the development of nanostructured steel for high strength and high toughness applications and a section of his thesis has been published in MSEA. He would be working on ‘Microstructure-property relationships of conductive polymers and substrates for organic solar cells’ under the supervision of Prof. Aparna Singh (IIT Bombay) and Dr. Laurence Brassart (Monash University). He enjoys playing cricket and football.”

Gokul completed his Masters in Marine Geophysics from Cochin University of Science and Technology(CUSAT), Kerala, in 2017 with University rank and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Union Christian College, Kerala (affliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam). He is an Inspire Scholarship for Higher Education holder awarded by the DST, Government of India. He did his master’s dissertation on ‘Studies on GPS measured Surface Kinematic Displacements from the 25th Nepal Earthquake’ under the guidance of Dr. Rajesh S. from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. He have 3 conference publications and had participated in various other geophysical training programmes during his masters. Joined the academy in July 2018 and is currently working in the project titled ‘The structure, Rheology and Tectonic Evolution of the lithosphere in the northeast Indian Ocean (IMURA0732)’ under the supervision of Prof. M. Radhakrishna(IITB) and Prof. Peter Betts(Monash). His interests include travelling and photography.

George TS has done his Master’s in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering from NITK Surathkal and has last worked as a Research Associate working on the development of an Intracranial stent at the Sree Chitra Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram. He has around 5 years of experience in the industry and 5 years in academia.
His current area of interest is Additive Manufacturing particularly of metals. At IITB, he can be found working on Additive Manufacturing of Composites under the supervision of Dr. Alankar Alankar in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In his spare time he likes to catch up on current affairs, trivia and football and is an avid quizzer.
